Ocean Blue is the The Possessions' second and strongest album - an 11-song tour-de-force of wailing guitars, gritty vocals and intense dance rhythms that solidifies the band's place on the cutting edge of New York City's rock/soul scene. The album began to take shape, however, a few thousand miles away from New York City, deep in the Mediterranean, in the Greek Islands. "I wrote a lot of these songs in Greece last summer," said Schiazza. "At night, in Santorini, there's this ethereal clash of old and new that's really jarring. There were a bunch of dance clubs atop the Caldera, and you could hear the beats echoing through the air at night. At the same time, in the distance, sits a volcanic crater that once blew the island to bits. I'd sit out at night and stare off into the horizon, listening to the muffled sounds of Greek club culture swirling around the crater. That juxtapositon really got to me, and I wrote a lot of the songs - "My Kinda Love," "All Into You," the title track and some others - before I even boarded the plane back to the States." Thematically, the band set to work on a concept of Eisnberg's that governed the composition of the album. "Tracy & I have spoken for a while about writing a break-up album, and that's just what Ocean Blue is," said Schiazza. "All the stages, from dissillusionment to regret to anger to recovery - it's all there." The album is also a musical leap forward for the band, who expanded their sound to include rhythms that are modern while still keeping one foot in the classic r&b bucket. "Our first few albums are really blues/rock/pop albums, which is where we were at the time" said Eisenberg. "We've been playing together for so long now, though, that we've expanded on what our core sound is. That's where songs like "My Kinda Love" and "Until You Releas Me" fit in: it's the us we never we were." Aside from the quality of the songs, Ocean Blue also finds the band at their sonic best. "We're more comfortable in the studio now, and I think you can hear that on this album," said Schiazza. "The drums sound crisper, and Tracy's vocals just kill. The sound on Ocean Blue is the best representation of the band yet." As for the band's next step: fans can expect more of the same. "We're going to gig most of the summer, into the Fall, and then start to work on new material as the leaves fall," said Eisenberg. "Frank usually has some tunes in the can by then, and we flesh them into Possessions' songs; it's our usual method." |
